Compiled by Alexander Mackenzie in 1896, the Frasers were a large and important family in Scottish history and he was without question one of the most influential historians and genealogists of the 19th century.

He took as his subject the Frasers of Lovat, for the history of the Frasers of Pilorth and its branches already had been described in great detail by Lord Saltoun. Mackenzie arranged his history chronologically, detailing each branch as it was settled over the centuries and then including finally two unrelated but closely allied families - the Frasers of Dunbolloch and Phopachy. The member of this family who was best known in his day was Simon, Lord Lovat, who in the 18th century was a major, if at times uncertain, player in the Jacobite activities of the day; this Lord Lovat fills at least a third of this monumental history with his life and letters.

In all, some 16 Lord Lovats are studied along with the Frasers of Brea, Strichen, Farraline, Erchitt, Balnain, Leadclune, Aldourie, Gortuleg, Culduthel, Castle Leathers, Culbrokie, Balladrum, Achnagairn, Struv, Eskadale, Ardachy, Boblainy, Fairfield, Foyers, Reelick, Phopachy and Swordale. Other families noted include: Grant, MacDonald, Mackenzie, Rose and Ross.

This CD consists of scans of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
