Written by John Eaton Reid, and originally published in 1864, this 288 page on the history of Bute is a standard work on the subject.

Covering Bute, Arran, the two Cumbrays and Inchmarnock, plus the Holy Isle and Pladda, all situated in the Firth of Clyde together constitute the old county of Bute. Argyle and Ayrshire flank this county and determine much of its history and character. As is common with county histories of the 19th century, this study describes the natural features and prehistoric remains before moving on to a chronological account of the pre-Norse and Norse centuries, the rise of the Stewart family and historical occurrences from the time of Robert Bruce until the death of James V,  English interests in the 16th century, the religious reformation and the civil wars of the 17th century, and then onward into the 19th century. There is as well much material on the borough of Rothesay, the nature of the proprietary control of the county, parochial history, various pieces of statistical information, lists of MPs, sheriffs, magistrates, etc., and finally, genealogical accounts of the peerages associated with the county - Hamilton, Bute, Eglinton, Glasgow - and information on such landowning families as Stuart, Bannatyne, MacKirdy, Glass and Jamieson.
