This is a history of the province of Ross, beginning with the medieval period and continuing through the Norse occupation of Ross, and the response by the kings of Scotland. The second and most significant founding of the Earldom of Ross down to the Wars of Independence and the emergence of King Robert the Bruce form the core of the study into the 14th century. The Reformation and the religious changes which it brought to Ross, the civil wars of the 16th century, the impact of the succession of King James VI to the throne of England, the civil wars of the 17th century, and the Jacobite movement all are presented in detail as they were played out in Ross. Ross, Mackenzie, Munro, and Donald are but a few of the families studied here.
