Published in 1893, the first volume covers the period 1762 to 1792. It has two parts – the first covering Cook (to 1780) and the second Phillip (1783-1792).

Part 1 – includes extracts from the log book of Captain Cook in the Endeavour, notes to Cook’s logs, journals of the voyage of the Endeavour by Zachary Hicks, Stephen Forwood, Richard Pickersgill, Charles Clerke, Francis Wilkinson, and John Bootie, general correspondence relating to Cook, a fragment from Cook’s last journal, and more. There is also a set of facsimile charts taken on board the Endeavour in 1768, 1769 and 1770.

Part 2 – includes material relating to transportation, the First Fleet, nature of the country, the natives, wants of the settlement, the New South Wales Corps, the mutiny of the Bounty, Norfolk Island, the second fleet, Land Grants, and complaints of the military – many, many documents relating to the years 1783 to 1792.

SAMPLE ENTRY:

Those convicts whose sentences of transportation expired and have been permitted to become settlers at or near Parramatta, are to be supported and cloathed from the public store for eighteen months, to receive two sow pigs with the necessary implements of husbandry and grain for sowing the ground the first year. Those who have wives or children are to support them at the expiration of the above eighteen months.
