Having previously compiled a history of Galloway, the author of this work continued his investigation into that region by bringing together historical and traditional tales either written by authors from Galloway or on topics about Galloway. Every tale has reference to or reflects the lands known as the Lordship of Galloway. The range of characters is extensive and includes peasants and lords, criminals and heroes. He begins with prose tales, and then continues in the second part of the book with tales in poetry. The whole is a thorough exploration of Galloway as it was in the first half of the 19th century.
