Nearly 80,000 convicts were transported to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) between 1803 and 1853. Each one left a unique record.
This Handy Guide outlines the primary Tasmanian convict records – the convict conduct record, the indent and the description list. It also looks at supplementary records. It discusses what the records contain and how the content changed over time, and defines frequently used terms such as ticket-of-leave and certificate of freedom. The Guide explains the system of convict administration in Van Diemen's Land, including the assignment and probation systems, and how the records differ for each. It also explores Tasmanian places associated with convicts and the convict system, including those that form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Convict Sites listing.
Importantly, it provides advice on where to start Tasmanian convict research, and gives a link to Libraries Tasmania Tasmanian Names Index, an essential finding aid. The records held in the Tasmanian Archives meticulously document the life of each convict. The significance of this archival collection was recognised when it was inscribed on the Australian Register UNESCO Memory of the World program in 2006. The guide provides useful links to websites and convict databases, such as the Female Convicts Research Centre database.
