Small beginnings ... growth ... added genealogy services ... winding back
If you follow us through our newsletters and events you will be aware of changes in recent years - and last year in particular. After 48 years of offering a wide range of products and services, the time will come when Gould Genealogy will close altogether, at least as it has been known for 48 years. And perhaps pick up some of my own history/genealogy interests that have taken a back seat for the last 35 plus years.
Our history
Here is an outline of our beginnings, growth and downsizing.
- 1971 - history genealogy interest (Alan) began
- 1976 - began part time genealogy bookshop from our home at Cudlee Creek in the Adelaide Hills. Partnering with History House Bookshop in Melbourne, we initially sold at meetings of the SA Genealogy & Heraldry Society.
- May 1977 - issued first catalogue, an A4 sheet folded to DL size. Attended first Australasian Congress in Melbourne, where History House Bookshop finally closed, leaving us as the soles genealogy reseller in the country
- June 1978 - adopted the name Gould Books, from family ancestral connections - and the name of the road we lived on at the time
- 1981 - relocated to Gumeracha, next town on from Cudlee Creek
- 1982 - changed from part time to full time - and installed offset printing press - began attending events
More than just bookselling
