A Charter chest was located in the safest place within every great medieval castle, for it was there that important documents were preserved, safe, it was hoped, from fire or theft. It was necessary to show how land or other rights were held, from whom and for what annual payment; and of course marriage agreements, land sales, and important letters often were thrust into these great locked chests. Often these papers were forgotten for centuries and in this case, the great charter chests at Cluny contained a wide variety of primary papers relating not only to the MacPhersons but to the families with whom they inter married. Each of these chapters deals with a particular group of materials. There are selections from the letters of MacPherson and Fraser of Lovat relating to the 1740s and the Jacobite activities of those great families to the efforts of Prince Charles Stuart. The Claverhouse Letters relate to Viscount Dundee and the events of 1688-1690 and to the consequences of that attempt to retain the throne for King James VII. The letters relating to the MacPhersons and the Jacobite cause from 1688-1760 constitute the largest part of this extensive selection, and included are letters and information relating to most of the great Jacobite families of Scotland. Finally there is an extensive selection of poetry in Gaelic preserved by Cluny and more or less of the same era as that supplied by James MacPherson of Ossian fame.

This CD consists of scans of the original books, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
