Part dictionary and part gazetteer, this is a magnificent reference work for locating places and geographical features around Australia in the 1840s.
Arranged alphabetically, the entries cover towns, mountains, gulfs, capes, rivers, creeks, valleys and more. Each has a reference advising what is nearby, or other features:
Example entries:
- DUNMORE. Is situated in the district of Darling Downs, N.S.W. It is the station of Robert Logan.
- GERINGONG. A village of N.S.W., in the county of Camden, below Kiama, situated 87 miles from Sydney.
- HAHNDORFF. A village of S.A., in the district of Mount Barker.
This book was written by William Henry Wells in order to better acquaint the British public and administration with information on the colonies of Australia. The information provided is both topographical and statistical and was very useful for reference at that time.
A comprehensive book of over 500 pages, the entries largely relate to New South Wales, but there are some entries that relate to Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania. Many entries are a short paragraph similar in length to the above example entires, others are half a page, or more. In addition to this, there are numerous colour maps.
High quality scanned images of the whole of the original book, bookmarked for easy navigation. Pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
