This study of the Colt family begins with a chapter on those of the name in England and their place among the Anglo-Norman feudal lords after 1066. The primary focus, however, is upon those of the name who settled as Auchtercoul in Aberdeenshire and branches of that family who held lands and interests in Montrose. There follow chapters on the Colts or Coutts or Fifeshire, Perthshire, and Inveresk, and finally on the family of Colt in the United States. The material included is both genealogical and historical.
