"Forgotten Tasmanians" is a history of 19th century Van Diemen's Land (and Tasmania). The first half of the book is based on the life of George Stokell who subsequently became a rich merchant, pastoralist and entrepreneur and the biggest landowner in Southern Tasmania.

The second part of the book is based on his grandson Sir John Stokell Dodds, Politician, Chief Justice and Lieutenant Governor of Tasmania.

From a depressed England after the Napoleonic wars to the time of the Great War, the development of Tasmania is portrayed through the lives of these two little known men, their families and many of their well known associates. This book is edited by Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Tasmania, Michael Roe, who also wrote the Foreword.
