Written by William Wilson in 1904, this book of 267 pages, is primarily is a history of a Border region long associated with Celtic as well as Anglo-Saxon families. Traditionally, Dumfriesshire was divided into three great divisions with Nithsdale the westernmost of the three. It was defined as the region drained by and defined by the River Nith and it sometimes was known as Strathnith or Stranith. Sanquhar figures prominently in this history as well. This then is a history of that region with particular emphasis upon the popular folklore of the area and the families who inhabited it. There is material therefore on the town pipers, on Covenanters or Presbyterians and upon the greater and lesser families of Upper Nithsdale.

The genealogies are of the following families: the Crichton Lords of Sanquhar; Crichton of Ryehill, Carco, Gairland, Libry, and Eliock; Dalziel of Eliock; Veitch of Eliock; M'Cririck of M'Cririck's Cairn; Williamson of Castle Robert; M'Math of Dalpeddar; Hair of Glenwharry; M'Call of Guffockland; Wilson of Spango; Bannatyne of Glendyne; and Kyle of Corseneuk.
