In Scottish history the reign of Robert the Bruce and the transfer of power and lands throughout the realm to those who supported him in the War of Independence marks a definitive point in the evolution of the kingdom. This history includes, of course, an account of the Scotland that existed before the late 13th century and of the place of these two great families who would so resolutely fight for the Crown.

The failure of the royal line to provide an undoubted heir led to the long battle for the Crown which elevated the Bruces to royal status and which marked the decline of the great Comyns who had dominated Scottish politics for so long. This, however, is more than a history of the main Bruce line, for there are extensive chapters on the cadet lines as well.

The second major portion of the study is devoted to the Cumyn (or Comyn) family both before and after the War of Indpendence. The final portion of the book is devoted to a number of related families including the Earls of Sutherland and Gordons of Gordonstown; the Donald Lords of the Isles; the Earls of Athol; the De Morevilles and De Quinceys; the House of Douglas; the Earls of Ross; and the families of Dundas, Blair, Rose, Pitcairn, and Dunbar.
