Written by Lawrence Melville, and originally published in 1935. This is a local history at its most informative. Errol is both a parish and a village in Perthshire, situated east of the town of Perth and southwest of the town of Dundee. As such, it is more or less in the middle of Scotland, and many events marched over it.
The Hays of Errol and all of their cadet lines were the principal family, but the Constable and Playfair families, the Russells, the Bells, the Taits, Charteris, and Tweedsdale families all were present in the parish or involved in its history. The author gives an entire chapter to the Hays, and then proceeds to the history of the village, to Port Allen and the economic, social, and cultural history of the parish.
