Compiled by A. Merwyn Carey, this biographical encyclopedia of firearms makers of the British Isles provides information on gunsmiths collected from a wide range of primary and secondary sources, providing as comprehensively as possible an alphabetical listing of those who worked in the British Isles from the earliest times.

Carey sought as well to discuss the evolution both of the form of the firearm and of its decoration. The book includes patents held, histories of the firms, the dates they were in business, and where they were located. It is a work which makes quite clear the impact of the growth of empire from the 18th century onward, showing the growth of demand from those serving abroad, both in the armed forces and in other branches of colonial government, for personal firearms as well as for arms for big game hunting. The entries are alphabetical, with all available information include to provide as analysis of the firearm makers.

This CD consists of scans of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
