Much has been written about those who wont overseas during World War II, to fight in Europe and the Pacific area, but much less about the women and children who were left behind to "do their bit"to win the war.

Although those in Australia did not suffer the miseries and privations endured by their cousins overseas, there was always fear that their loved ones might not return. With food and other shortages and the threat of invasion from the Japanese, their efforts went to a new level. 'Doing their Bit'is their story.

Prior to WWII, women were restricted to medical work, but as the war progressed the need to free up men or the warzones saw the introduction of women's auxiliaries to expand the Army, Navy and Air Force. Dedicates chapters to each of these armed services is included as is the Women's Land Army and other groups.

The author also covers the Cheer-Up Society, the Royal Naval Friendly Union, the Schools Patriotic Fund, the Girl Guides and other patriotic groups.
