Did your ancestors in South Australia own sheep? Have you thought of looking in the Brands Directories for more information on them? These are a unique, useful source for family historians. Local historians will also find them a great resource, with the ability to easily reconstruct lists of stock owners in their region.
What is a sheep brand? A unique symbol or combination of symbols and/or letters to identify who the animal/s belonged to. This symbol was printed on to the sheep, or on a tag attached to the sheep (usually the ear).
What information can be found in a brand directory? You will find an image of the brand registered, certificate number, former brands, name of proprietor, run where the brand is to be used (address), and nearest post town to the run.
This volume is divided into three sections:
- sheep brands
- sheep earmarks and firebrands
- alphabetical list of names of owners
High quality scanned images of the whole of the original book. It has been bookmarked for easy navigation, and pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
