Published in 1875, the fourth edition of this historic work includes the changes that occurred since the third edition of 1852. As with the first edition of 1834, John Dunmore Lang wrote this edition of over 1,000 pages almost entirely at sea.
The first of the two volumes examines the progress of the colony under Governors Arthur Phillip, Hunter, King, Bligh, Macquarie, Brisbane, Darling, Bourke, Gipps, Fitzroy, Denison, Young, Earl Belmore and Sir Hercules Robinson.
The second volume focuses on the physical characteristics, natural and agricultural productions, population, the western counties, the Hunter and Manning Rivers, the southern counties, the Clarence River district, gold discoveries, view of the state and prospects of education, an estimate of the state of morals and religion in the colony, mail communication with England and the Australian future.
... this game is now up, and the days of squatting - in the sense of a powerful political party for whose aggrandizement the interests of the public were so long compromised and sacrificed - are now ended.
