The town of Aberdeen is one of the most important on the east coast of Scotland, and this survey and history begins with a historical account of the city and a sketch of its ancient customs and manners. It then continues with descriptions of its public buildings and churches, as well as an account of religion and religious changes in the city, and of its literature and literary contribution to Scotland overall. Literally no aspect of the nature of the town is ignored, and the whole is a complete survey of what was considered important in Aberdeen as of the early 19th century. The illustrations are particularly important for their depiction of the most important buildings of the town before the substantive changes of the 19th and 20th centuries.
