Aldersgate began as an institution-type home in 1944. By 1960 it had evolved into a ‘showcase’ community retirement village and changed its original name from The Central Mission Old Folks’ Home to Aldersgate.

It became a model retirement village, its positive reputation being acclaimed in South Australia, interstate and overseas. The Adelaide Central Mission had good reason to feel proud of its achievements in the field of aged care, for Aldersgate became a place that people not only were admitted to out of need but could also choose to retire to.
