Overview - cruise - conference - tour package

A comprehensive conference, tour and cruise package - do any one, two or three components

This has been developed in three locations around a 4 night cruise on the Mannum based Murray Princess (our 19th Unlock the Past cruise). 

ADELAIDE - 2 conference days Wed 20 and Fri 22 Aug, with Thu 21 Aug as a free day for research or tourist activities. See below for further details on the Adelaide program.

MANNUM - 2 days Sat 23 to Mon 25 Aug 2025 PLUS the cruise - BOOKINGS NOW OPEN
Two days in Mannum to explore its history and share in some pre-cruise activities, including 4 conference sessions.

Pre-cruise - Adelaide conference and free research/tourist day

This conference is open to anyone, whether doing the cruise or not.

BOOKING pre-book by 13 August 2025 to be in the draw for several hundred $$$ in prizes.

CANCELLATION POLICY - if your circumstances change between your booking and the event, preventing you from attending, we will refund your booking fee in full - as long as you let us know by the day before the event.

NOTE: the following program is preliminary only. Some speakers have yet to be finalised and it is possible one or two of Helen's topics may change. There will be 4 or 5 more presentation at Mannum for those doing the Murray Princess cruise, some of them by Helen. We will supply a shortlist list of several more topics from Helen for you to help choose from - later this year.

SPEAKERS

Helen Smith (QLD) Helen is a speaker, DNA specialist, researcher, and author with a strong interest in Australian, English, medical and social history. She has spoken in person and online in every state and territory in Australia, in Canada, USA, New Zealand and England, on 18 Unlock the Past cruises and has regularly presented for Legacy Family Webinars. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the Genealogical Speakers Guild. Helen will head the program in Adelaide and also present at Mannum. SeDragon Genealogy (Helen's website) to learn more.

Andrew Redfern (NSW). Andrew Redfern is a passionate family historian and technology enthusiast. Since his initial interest in researching his family in the 1980s, Andrew has developed a deep interest in how technology can enhance the way we explore and preserve our family histories. Recently, this has incorporated artificial intelligence (AI) and he is excited to share the possibilities and potential it offers. He will present in Adelaide on Artificial Intelligence & Family History. See Andrew's website to learn more.

Helen and Andrew will be supported by others from Adelaide. The program will be published when we have finalised the other speakers.

Food & Drink 

  • This is not included in the conference cost. The venue has a bar and bistro with options to suit your preferences and budget. It is likely our own team - and anyone else who is interested - will stay for an evening meal at the club.

Location and access

  • Hisense Stadium (West Adelaide Football Club) 
  • Address 57 Milner Road, Richmond SA.
  • 4km west of the Adelaide CBD and 4km from Adelaide airport
  • Car parking is available at the venue.
  • Nearest bus stop (South Road) - 600 metre walk
  • Taxi from the Adelaide CBD -approx. $15 or $30 for maxi taxi (sharing lower the per-person cost down as low as $3-$5 each)


ADELAIDE RESEARCH - some suggestions

ADELAIDE TOURIST ACTIVITIES - some suggestions, most are within walking distance or a tram ride within or near the CBD

ACCOMMODATION - not included in the conference cost

We will do some more checking, but for now here are 2 of likely options. Both are about 7km from the Adelaide airport, 4km from the conference venue and 100 metres from the Adelaide Railway stations. Most of the places listed above are within walking distance or a short tram ride.

  • Grosvenor Hotel - 125 North Terrace, Adelaide - current rates from approx. $130 per night
  • Stamford Plaza Hotel - 150 North Terrace, Adelaide - current rates from $193 per night

You can check numerous other options by searching Google Maps for "accommodation Adelaide CBD", but keep in mind that our tours to Mannum and Kangaroo Island are likely to leave from one of the above hotels.

In Adelaide - there are numerous places to eat in Rundle Mall and Hindley Street - if you are staying as a hotel on or near North Terrace.
